Passed by the Capitol House in Hartford as we headed to the
Mark Twain home. We enjoyed this tour
and history of this impressive man. Not
only was he a great author and satirist, but he cared deeply about the
abolition movement, suffrage movement and also wrote passionate columns against
imperialism (even to President Teddy Roosevelt!).
I am reading Uncle Tom’s Cabin as we are on this trip, and
its thoughts run parallel to what we have been hearing on our tours. There was a great divide in the church in
regards to slavery –many fine Christians and pastors believed that God’s Word
spoke in support of having slaves while many other churches stood against
it. In Hartford, the Harriet Beecher
Stowe family was instrumental in building the Congregational Church there,
where the basement was used as an Underground Railroad!! Yay for them! Cultural issues may change, but Christians
are still warring against one another in their values and interpretation of
Scripture. Makes me long for heaven…
